The universe does what the universe does. The universe universes.

I just finished reading ALAS, BABYLON by Pat Frank and I must say that after more than sixty years it still holds up. The very beginning is a little slow and there is a bizarre switch in main viewpoint character early on, but the story still packs a wallop.

For some reason the premise of PLURIBUS--a genetic structure transmitted to Earth by an alien race--gave me a sense of deja vu.

BEASTLY

It came shambling out of the east
The terrible awful horrendous beast
Upon the people it began to feast
Exhibiting no mercy in the least

One man went forth the thing to slay
A lowly peasant whose name was Ray
In no time him the beast did flay
And continues its slaughter to this day

PICKMAN'S MOTEL

Of accommodations it's the finest
Place in Arkham to stop and rest
Though the staff's looks are unusual
Pale and gaunt like that of a ghoul

Checking in is pleasant and nice
Checking out you will do twice
Once when you die in your room
Then your corpse the staff doth consume

DRAGON POUND

I decided I wanted to take on
The care and feeding of a dragon
To the local pound I went and shopped
Picked out a young drake to adopt

Soon however my temper was seething
It turned out to be fire-breathing
To refuse its return the pound chose
Said to line my house with asbestos

INFINITAL

A new kind of drug was invented
Its dangers were well-documented
Taking it there's a chance you might
Lose yourself forever in the infinite

Your mind adrift in space endless
Alone in all the cosmic vastness
The one thing you don't want to do
Is have everything become clear to you

WHOM GOURDS DESTROY

It was Dr. Beck's experiment
Carried out without bad intent
To make pumpkins intelligent
Render them capable of movement

Too late he realized his mistake
In his shoes he did quake
The orange monsters him did take
And impaled him upon a stake

The movie STARSHIP TROOPERS has some problems, but I really like Clancy Brown's performance as the callous drill sergeant Zim. He plays it very matter-of-factly, which makes it simultaneously hilarious, horrifying, and realistic. The actor fully understood the assignment.

BODILY FLUID

Joe had a unique ability
Turning his body to fluidity
Becoming a totally liquid self
Slept in a can upon a shelf

He found out he had a foe
An archvillain named Mr. Glow
His power was generating heat
Dried up Joe in utter defeat

Someday we will meet aliens who are from the planet Treligos, which they will tell us means "Home of the Valiant Survivors." They will ask us what planet we are from. We will say "We are from Earth" and they will ask us what Earth means. And we will have to answer "Dirt."

BURNING MOON

A meteor struck Clavius Crater
The dire effects showed up later
Our moon began burning bright
Became a second sun in the night

Caused by alien nanotechnology
It generated more than luminosity
Heat also blazed down on Earth
Of life on the planet there was soon a dearth

I really think people should reconsider using "Hive Mind" as a positive term to refer to people on this platform. It has really negative connotations of lack of individuality and people not thinking for themselves, of collectives marching mindlessly in unison.

SPECIMEN X

We began to study Specimen X
An alien creature which had no sex
No sign of how it could breed
Which is a basic biological need

I figured out this living anomaly
Seems it procreated transtemporally
Forward in time itself did clone
Was ancestor and child all in one

LEPTON TEA

I drank a cup of lepton tea
It changed me constitutionally
My quantum state it energized
Made me feel revitalized

Cosmic vistas opened to me
The subatomic world I did see
Wished I this perception would last
But the effects eventually passed

WINDWORLD

Our ship crashed on Procyon Four
Where high winds constantly roar
Quickly the damage we sought to repair
As the wind's howling was hard to bear

We had to work on the outer hull
Of native beasts we weren't fearful
A howl was heard outside the hatch
Its source with claws us did catch

GALAXY BRAIN

Talking to the Galaxy Brain
Caused me terrible mental strain
I visited his star-sized palace
Located deep in Cerebral Space

Awed by his Great Gray Matter
No time had I for idle chatter
Asked if humans had significance
He told me there was not a chance

AUNT IQUITY

A fun aunt if a bit strange
Over the years she didn't change
Showed no signs of any age
Time her fair skin did not ravage

One day I asked her about it
She said since I was her favorite
Honestly would she answer me
And share her secret of immortality

OMEGOTH

Billy Shade wore dark attire
Poe and Rimbaud he did admire
Painted black his eyes and lips
One day woke up to the Apocalypse

Raised a glass of absinthe in salutation
To the worldwide devastation
Besides him some normies did live
Them grim guidance he resolved to give

SURREAL KILLER

He modeled his first fatality
In the style of Salvador Dali
With melting flesh and runny eyes
And black lips painted on her thighs

His next corpse was peeled a la Escher
Inspired by Bosch was his last murder
Like a hybrid monster from his art
Of which the killer's body was a part

There are various perspectives on science fiction, but I think of it primarily as a literature of ideas. Yes, character, storytelling, and quality of writing are important, but it is the intelligent and thought-provoking ideas, the bold speculation, the sense of wonder, which define it as a genre.

I just watched the trailer for "Project Hail Mary" and I gotta say it looks encouraging. Maybe they won't screw this up.
