Best way to send off this month!

Day 28: A More Perfect Union, by President Barack Obama

Iconic, yet very important speech made by President Obama. It was a speech focused on race relations and a response to his pastor that almost derailed his campaign.

I went through so many pieces that didn't have a way to read them online, it's insane. 😮‍💨

Day 27: My God, It's Full of Stars, by Tracy K. Smith

Tracy K. Smith is also another poet laureate! Her pen was definitely hot when writing this poem.

I feel goofy for this, but hear me out.

Day 26: Twenty-Six Ways of Looking at a Blackman, by Raymond Patterson

It was a poem that was inspired by Wallace Stevens' "Thirteen ways of Looking at a Blackbird," which also is very nuanced.

With minutes to spare!

Day 25: The Hill We Climb, by Amanda Gorman

Amanda Gorman is the youngest inaugural poet in US history and she did this poem during Joe Biden's inauguration. The sense of unity and togetherness is strong within it!

Four more days -- I gotta make it count.

Day 24: Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates

Very iconic book. It was meant as a letter to his son telling the experiences/realities as a black man in America and the challenges it presents.

I gotta stop posting so late!

Day 23: when the rainbow is enuf, by Ntozake Shange

I'm not posting the full name of this choreopoem. These were inspired by real life events from the author's life. There's seven women, each defined by a different color.

I promise I'm awake this time.

Day 22: The Mothering Blackness, by Maya Angelou

I like the sense of comfort and homecoming that the poem gives. Very short poem, but there's a good amount of depth within it.

While I'm here, I might as well post today's as well.

Day 21: Rootedness: The Ancestor as Foundation, by Toni Morrison

Y'all think I'm just gonna waltz through my favorite works without mentioning Morrison? 🤨

Yeah, I'm posting late, sorry! I fell asleep and almost forgot where I was. 🥴

Day 20: The Idea of Ancestry, by Etheridge Knight

It's a very iconic poem made by Knight while he was in jail and I love how this poem touches on interconnectivity.

This month is going by fast. 😕

Day 19: I am a Cowboy in the Boat of Ra, by Ishmael Reed

I really love the use of Egyptian Mythology and the many allusions he uses throughout the poem!

Can't have Malcolm X without MLK!

Day 18: The Three Evils of Society, by Martin Luther King Jr.

It's a speech that I find really interesting from MLK. Though it might not be popular as his other speeches, this speech holds some weight to it.

President's Day!

Day 17: Message to the Grassroots, by Malcolm X

I know the Ballot or the Bullet is an iconic speech, but given our current events, our "bullets" seemed to have missed the target. Also, this is my favorite speech from Malcolm X. 😀

I DON'T FORGET! 🗣️

Day 16: Smoke, Lilies, and Jade, by Richard Bruce Nugent

This piece is very different; the way it reads might take a hot second, but trust, it's very good. This piece deals with sexuality and identity as well if you are interested!

I can't believe we're already halfway through the month. 🥲

Day 15: On Being Young — a Woman — and Colored, by Marita Bonner

This is a short essay on what it's like to be a black woman in a world of white privilege. It's such a nice read!

ALL RISE FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM! 🗣️

Day 14: Lift Every Voice and Sing, by James Weldon Johnson and John Rosamond Johnson

I'm doing a post now because I'm not sure when I'll have time when I get home tomorrow.

Day 13: Characteristics of Negro Expression, by Zora Neale Hurston

Hurston definitely deserves her roses for sure. It would be a shame for her not to be on this.

I was gonna do a poem, but I think this might be his best work to share.

Day 12: Home to Harlem, by Claude McKay

This dude has so many great poems and stories to share and it's so hard to pick a favorite, but this book in particular is... interesting!

I'm fighting sleep, so let's make this quick!

Day 11: The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man, by James W. Johnson

Although it says it is an autobiography, the main character is still a fictional character, but their experiences are realistic.

I fell asleep. MY BAD -- LONG DAY.

Day 10: The Wife of His Youth, by Charles W. Chesnutt

Very good story! It paints a picture that colorism and prejudice based upon class can exist within the black community.

Lemme post before the Super Bowl kicks off.

Day 9: Atlanta Exposition Address, by Booker T. Washington

This speech is infamously known as the "Atlanta Compromise Speech," penned by Du Bois from yesterday's post.

I haven't forgot!

Day 8: The Souls of Black Folk, by W.E.B Du Bois

This book is comprised of multiple essays written by Du Bois about race relations and the black experience in the 20th century. My favorite piece is his response to Booker T's speech!
