Most wilderness hiking, and all wilderness hiking in the cold months, should be strictly at your own risk. Sending out search parties in hazardous conditions is wildly irresponsible, and that's not the fault of wilderness restoration, FFS. The mountains aren't a goddamn playground.

You won't find these guys arguing to put themselves out of a job, though - just to make it easier. Bottom line, anyone who tackles a high peak in late November, alone, in a snow storm, is either actively trying to die, or just too stupid and selfish to live.

Like, for sure it's fucked up that rangers currently have to risk their safety and waste public resources looking for people who take irresponsible risks with their own lives; but there are policy solutions for that, short of scrapping rewilding practices.

I think they got the English population mixed up with the total for the UK, and we all know England's top export is bad police procedurals. Still real, unfortunately, but nothing a good revolution couldn't fix.
