Make your expectations clear and visible. Do not use the word ”common sense” when building a company. It means you are shying away from the responsibility of being a leader. Rant over 😅

If not, and 💩 hits the fan, look in a mirror. I hear this too often from founders who don’t want to see that the boring operational stuff matters. There’s no common sense in a well-working machine, there are instructions and clear expectations of what the machine produce.

You wish people not to do dumb 💩. That’s the ultimate wish.

But you can’t have that as an expectation if your operational structure isn’t supporting it! So, for the love of all mighty power, check your own actions first. Have you made your company’s ”common sense” visible and documented?

I try to think about it from the resiliency point of view, considering myself an athlete, and the sport is a business. It has helped a ton to change the perspective and understand how to build those systems, so I’m not the bottleneck. It still happens, but resilience thinking has helped a lot.
