Yeah — the basic problem is that public preferences in America are just incoherent. If you want affordable, plentiful housing where everyone has a detached house with a lawn but can walk to a coffee shop five minutes away, you basically need large-scale spatial magic.

I think too that without an example like this it’s hard to motivate the changes to make backsliding harder next time. It’s one thing to theoretically know that a given reform would be better and another for it to actually get widespread support.

Still would require constitutional amendments, but marginalization due to coalition fracture seems the best way to handle the fact that 30% of the electorate seems to prefer fascism.

The best approach I’ve seen would be to try to shift to a parliamentary system:

- Allow House races to be based on proportional representation by state.
- Reduce the power and significance of the Senate.
- Allow a simple majority of the House to appoint a new President and VP.

It’s such a comparatively low level of risk too — the very small probability of being nuked in the US doesn’t compare with the certainty that Ukrainians face of cruise missile strikes or drone trainees murdering senior citizens.
