Interesting FT story on the Italy referendum on citizenship. Italy is ageing rapidly and faces significant economic challenges from ageing - it has failed to adapt. Migration wont be the solution (alone) but it has a role to play on.ft.com/4dIv7KW

www.agcc.co.uk/news-article... Interesting framing here. I'd argue that historically some older people have been told to expect some aches and pains (ageism). We need better medication and more innovation. Yes CBT/Apps/AI too. Pain is arguably the big quality of life issue as we age.
Is overprescribing of pain medication harming older people?
A new study will explore chronic pain prescribing in older adults around the UK, with the aim of highlighting the extent of the population impacted and whether current treatments and processes meet th...

The terms of reference for the Casey #socialcare commission are published today (though staff have been working for a while). There are concerns, particularly timing, but they should offer the scope Baroness Casey needs to do a thorough job. Thread below ⬇️ www.gov.uk/government/p...

State pension age starts rising again in April 2026. Most people in their early 60s know their state pension age, but a significant minority are incorrect or unaware.

This is worrying as people may base retirement and saving decisions on incorrect information. Short thread👇
NEW: One-in-six of those with a state pension age between 66 and 67 – around 130,000 people – either underestimate or do not know when they’ll be able to claim their state pension.

Speaking this morning in Sofia at the first Bulgarian conference on longevity organised by Капитал newspaper. Lots of people talking about extending life. I'm pointing out that Bulgaria isn't yet getting the basics right (vaccination uptake is low in adults for example(.

The @theguardian.com is doing some really great work on femicide.

This is such an important issue. I sometimes make the mistake of feeling less vulnerable as I age. The relief of the end of leering and the cat calling doesn't mean the risk is disappearing.

I’ve written a post over on LinkedIn about the increasing number of older people in prison and how education provision needs to adapt, based on my recent talk for @ilcuk.bsky.social.

Meeting the needs of older people in prison
The number of older people in prison has mushroomed over the last two decades. In 2002 there were 4,824 people aged 50 or over in prison, 7% of the prison population.

When we rebranded @ilcuk.bsky.social in 2018 we used the stat that one in three girls can expect to live to 100. A couple of years ago it fell to one in four girls. Today it's one in five girls (one in 6 boys). www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
UK men and women can expect to live longer, data show
Boys born in the UK in 2023 can expect to live on average to 86.7 years, and girls to 90, experts suggest.

"We need to drive innovation to deliver prevention - particularly in areas such as adult #vaccination", argues Richard Maughan.

But challenges remain - lower flu vaccine uptake this year shows that there's still a long way to go in achieving better health outcomes in the UK.
