Midwestern by choice. Humanist by upbringing. Staunch fan of the Minnesota Twins. Reader (sci fi, spec fiction, fantasy), writer (meandering essays, mostly), and lover of many geeky things. She/her.
My daughter has stuggled with mental health issues most of her life, and her hallucinations with "the shadow man" have terrified her (and me, for her). So when she showed me this, it brought me to tears. (She lives across from the Renaissance Depot in DT Mpls, which houses ICE.)

Finally said goodbye to my big, beautiful rescue cat Pauley. Took him four days to let go - not so much fighting as stubborn. So glad to give him a decade of love after being abandoned. He was a crotchety old man from the onset, but he was tolerated - and loved. He'll be missed.

My daughter Josie had to go to the ER last night. She's no stranger to ERs. But when she got home, she wrote this. She gives me hope for the future.

Oh, Pablo. I'm going to miss watching you pitch! I hope your rehab goes very, very well.

Can I just say how amazing Noma Dumezweni is as Dr. Mensah in "Murderbot"? I mean, my favorite supporting character is Ratthi and I love Alexander Skarsgård in the title role, but she is amazing in her understated resolve and humanity. Gads, this is a great cast and a stellar show.

Ladies and gentlemen, the pitchers are in the house! WooHOO!!!

Just snagged two tickets to Star Wars night at Target Field... cuz the bobbleheads are back! Carlos Correa as a Jedi knight? Yes, please! I am SO ready for baseball season to start! (Okay, so this probably isn't what the bobblehead will really look like, but I DON'T CARE! I have a full set so far!)

Oh, my gosh, this dog. Makes my heart explode. I'm so gosh darn lucky that I was able to adopt him two+ years ago. Such a good boy.

Ah, Max. You were so fun to get to know, so fun to watch. Good luck in Philly, man. Thanks for not going to Cleveland.

The longest night. It's all uphill from here. :)

Big day for Joe Mauer, the Minnesota Twins and the state of Minnesota. Well played, Mauer. So very, very well played.

It's nice when a guy who few people know but who has a whole lotta talent and gives so much effort gets some of the recognition he deserves. Way to go, Willi! Enjoy your first All Star game!

My man Bailey! Picked up a signed baseball from him last year, so made it my mission to learn more about him, and really, really liked what I found. And today - an 89 pitch complete game! Way to go, Bailey!

My sweet pup - fostered by a friend while I've been in the hospital - apparently killed two bunnies last week. I'm devastated, even while realizing this is, um, normal. I still love him, but glad that the critters in my yard dwell under my back porch, and he's regulated to the fenced-in front yard!

Congratulations Joe Mauer, for getting into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot. Yah, sure, you betcha!

Hmmm, I wonder what Finn wants. Toys? Nah, has lots right there. Treats? Well, always, but he's gotten all the treats he's going to get today. Food? He's got a full bowl of kibble in the kitchen that he's dutifully ignoring. Loving? I bet that's it. Lots and lots of loving. Okay, mister. You got it.

Today my boss gave me this tiny music box that plays the Fellowship theme from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The box contains no hardware - just interlocking wooden panels. It's simple, lovely, and gosh darn - he knows me. Oftentimes it's the simplist gestures that resonate.

Just finished watching "Field of Dreams", probably 'cuz of today's baseball news, but also because it's the end of my work week and, well, the world.... I needed something sweet and quiet and uplifting. And dang, even though it was released in 1989, it still holds up, even now. Maybe especially now.

Dogs are so amazing. On days when life throws you a curveball and you worry about tomorrow and the days after, they remind you that they love you no matter what and that makes everything so much easier to deal with. (And yes, any pet will do this, but for me, it's my sweetheart dog.)

Islan Nettles. Beaten to death in Harlem on August 17, 2013. The killer, James Dixon, was not indicted until March 2015, despite confessing that he had flown into "a blind fury" when he realized that Nettles was a transgender woman. He got 12 years. She's still gone. Remember her.

Only barely tangentially in response to this skeet, I have a not so little Finn, and he's both the best kind of corruption and deeply cherished.

Happy birthday, Carrie, wherever you are. You'll always be my princess.

In tonight's win, Royce Lewis with his 2 homers was the Twins offensive champion, but Michael A Taylor made two spectacular plays in centerfield, and Carlos Correa made an amazing throw from shortstop to throw out Bo Bichette at home plate. This team is for REAL, folks!
