The most important step in a recovery was to do it in a spool area, not the user's home, because when you'd finished the recovery and copied the file to their home you'd clean the 'spool' area with a DEL *.*;*. Oh, the number of times someone made that mistake...

As a Vax operator, I'd get recovery requests, the quickest "recovery" was to go to the user's home and check if an earlier version of the file existed. If so, we'd delete the latest 'corrupt' version, and miraculously 'recover' the file in record time. If not, off to the trusty Pertec 9 track tape
