“Sinners”… take me back to the church of cinema.

Balance is key. Two separate films, complimenting and completing each other, in order to tell a full story.

Ryan Coogler and his team knocked this one out of the park. The messaging both subtle and overt.
The cast was perfect.

Michael B. Jordan as Smoke in the film Sinners rolling a cigarette. I really can’t stress the brilliance of this film. It hit all of the right notes with regards to its messaging. It masterfully blends the beautiful and horror. It’s poignant without and does so without compromising or forgetting that it’s a horror film at the end of the day. It manages to accomplish the thing that escapes most horror filmmakers and it’s the Stephen King trademark of world and character building. Give us characters to care about and the horror becomes real! But that’s easier said than done. You need to have the guts and courage to let us simmer in your world, and do it without like the pan cool down. The timing and pace of the film were excellent. 2 hours in and I wasn’t ready to leave this world. Talking about that ending. Tears definitely started to swell in my eyes. That or somebody was cutting onions in the theater. So so so so so so so so good. This is why we pray at the church of cinema. Films like this are gospel and not only demand attention. They deserve it.

The Substance.

Wow.

The film was both entirely unfamiliar and felt like an homage to everything I’ve ever seen.

(Demi Moore’s Elizabeth Sparkle wiping her lipstick away in anger and frustration.) This film. Wow. In my opinion, The Substance is the only horror film this year to live up to the hype. To be fair though I haven’t seen Cuckoo, and a couple of others. But there is something about this film that just hit that special feeling. Like witnessing a moment where someone or something goes up to the next level. We’ve reached a new echelon of Horror and Art film. Lmao. But really it was great. The visuals were eye candy and the sound design and soundtrack were killer. Good theater experience too. An onslaught to the senses.

The dense fog rolls back to reveal OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) on horseback underneath a gate with the words ‘Out Yonder’ above. I think what does it for me with Nope, and Jordan Peele’s work in general, are the details you pick up and notice after several viewings of the film. I really appreciate that he knocks down a lot of what his stories set up. What caught my eye this viewing was the way Jupiter feels/acts numb to the trauma of the Gordy incident, even profiting off of it. It’s really off putting and disturbing and at the same time empathizing with someone who has probably had to shut themselves off just to keep going. It’s intricate, funny and the horror is pretty and horrific. I’m a fan.

Poor Things (2023)

Just wow… I don’t know if this film will go down as an all-time favorite. But 👏👏 for bringing some creativity to American cinema. Personally I’ve been whining about the lack of vision and art in films recently. Poor Things felt like it came from a different decade but fresh AF!

The Devils (1971)

There are so many aspects of this film that can be said and has been said.

It’s such a (rightfully) angry film about those who abuse their power, that unfortunately, still rings true today.

Hard watch but so well done. Ken Russell you brilliant bastard.

Shin Godzilla (2016)
Obviously late to this party but I’m blown away by this film. It’s hard to care about anything other than the monster in Kaiju films but Hideaki Anno absolutely knocked it out of the park. Literally evolving the monster beyond imagination.
