I never dreamed that self-interest would take the form of late-stage capitalism, wherein the whole modern world took on a ‘fuck you, I’ve got mine’ attitude and life became all about accumulating vast sums of wealth amid a failing ecosystem.

Because, my reasoning went, even if you were a genocidal or draconian militant, you had the aim of Earth’s continued existence in mind. That was just common sense, that was a magnetic North Pole for human beings. Self interest.
