Make plans on good maps - for people who like to make their own plans in the great outdoors for walks, runs, bike rides or whatever! Try it at https://new.simonlikesmaps.com
This canoe route down the Spey is downhill, but the elevation profile shows some ascent due to errors in the underlying data and how well the route is drawn. You can try to correct these using the smoothing tool - results shown in s/shot. #canoeing #kayaking #running #cycling #maps #routes

Here's three elevation profiles of one of my Sunday long runs, each rendered using one of the Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) in SimonLikesMaps. Differences creep in because of how each DEM survey measured the Earth differently. #running #walking #cycling #planning #DEM #elevation

Recently fixed a bug in the OpenSnowMap overlay. It's useful for planning offpiste / touring. Here's some recent planning I did in Les Arcs. IGN topo map, with pistes and lifts overlaid, and my route in red. Steep gradients highlighted in red on the elevation profile. #skiing #freeride #touring

For once the route planning was not based on maps, but where the best snow was. Great day ski touring on Raise in the Lake District! If you do need to plan a ski tour... obvs use new.simonlikesmaps.com with gradient highlighting for avalanche terrain and lots of useful topo maps #skiing #touring

Bing Maps expiry silver lining: I have added OS maps from their own servers to new.simonlikesmaps.com Interesting to see they are quite different to the Bing ones, which must have old data. Compare footpath corrections on pond and tree cover in this sample. #maps #routes #running #walking #cycling

I've fixed the last few (known) bugs and so I added this to the SLM code! v1.0.0 might not be perfect, but it is good enough that I can begin turning off the old one and make new.simonlikesmaps.com take over the www address. #maps #routes #planning #running #walking #cycling

I'm a runner as well as a cyclist and enjoy fell running too, so that helps a bit. Doing some v rough route planning and one particularly obscure one looked like the one just NE of the Holme Moss - Woodhead junction.

Getting into @veloviewer.com tile bagging and am setting myself a goal of visiting every square mile of the Peak District National Park by the end of 2025. Obvs doing the route planning on new.simonlikesmaps.com but Strava + VeloViewer plugin handy too. #peakdistrict #pdnp #routes #tilebagging

Norgeskart topo maps are back! Here's a reminder of what we missed - showing Oslo out to the Marka. I really like their clarity for complex terrain. Also the map loading has been optimised, so a missing map won't break everything (and it's faster). #maps #planning #routes #running #walking #cycling

Been doing some fine tuning on the correlation between the elevation profile and your route plan - it is trickier as the route gets longer. Satisfying to see on this 438km test route that at 167.5km the peak matches the contours very nicely.

One of the useful planning features of SimonLikesMaps is the Satellite Spy, which lets you look underneath the map to see what's actually there. Here's a fragment of OpenTopoMap with the Spy having a closer look at whether the footpaths exists or not. #running #walking #cycling #maps

Another lovely morning here, with snow and morning radiation fog. It got me route planning for a run into the snowy hills. Apparently there is a sign in a bog marking the source of the Derwent west of Barrow Stones? #running #peakdistrict new.simonlikesmaps.com/share/xY96L5

SimonLikesMaps HQ is up a hill in the Peak District and we often get cloud inversions. Here's this morning's, as the air cooled down in anticipation of our first cold snap of the year. The SLM app is great for planning trips to inversion hotspots.
