Early medievalist at IHR, Univ. of London, with a current research focus on water and human immersions. Also ethnicity, identity, migration and modern medievalisms. Regrettably likely to propose a lovely long walk given half a chance.
Layla is looking forward to seeing you, as am I!

Just back from a little holiday in unwontedly sunny Pembrokeshire. Pentre Ifan looking so perfect here that even the inadequacies of my cheap phone camera don't detract!

I'd never realised that these were the Lewis chessmen I wanted until this evening. At the rather wonderful Longleat Festival of Light.

An excellent end at Sverd i Fjell to the MARRI symposium The Middle Ages in the 20th and 21st Centuries: Relevance, Reimagination, Inspiration at the Universityof Stavanger. A wonderful two days that has flown by. Thanks to all the speakers and huge congratulations to the organisers!

With a group of students taking my archival sources course for @ihr.bsky.social at the Postal Museum & Archives in Mount Pleasant this morning. This splendidly tetchy introduction to A History of Postal Agitation written by a Mr H.G. Swift in 1900 is fun.

For a taste of what I get up to when in civvies, here I am in a crowd shot Green Lung have released from their Electric Ballroom gig last night; I'm the tall one in the centre with possibly ill-advised mutton chops and throwing the horns.

I've been on leave today and looking over the very final draft (fingers crossed) of a book chapter. But with that now bounced back to the editors it's time for a walk.

I was just taking the rubbish out this morning, but this was the view from the end of the road.

After two years of care, our raspberry repaid our efforts with this glorious fruitful abundance! We split it in half and it was delicious.

Always a pleasure to see friends' books out in the wild, but particularly impressive to see Gods of the Wyrd Wood by @rjbarker.bsky.social in an airport bookshop in Johannesburg! That's 5,000 miles from Leeds, which is more where I associate him with. The lad really has done good!
