J O’B was talking (shouting) over his comments and not making the slightest attempt to understand what his point was. It may or may not have been a good point, and there might be counter-arguments. It would have been good to have had a discussion rather than a flat-out rejection.

Continuing to live on the farm might well count as benefiting from the trust, depending I guess on how clever your lawyers were (relative to HMRC's lawyers, ofc).
The taper element does apply if the gift to the trust was above the IHT threshold.

A settlor (the person who gave the property to the trust) can be a trustee, but can't be a beneficiary.
