Christ on a bike. Last month I spent almost £300 on a refurbished office chair because of my back. I knew the British press were never going to give Labour an easy ride, but this really takes the biscuit.

The under-30's I work with are outstanding. They are focussed, dedicated, exceptionally hard-working and keep me on my toes. I mentor several of them, and I personally get a huge amount out of these relationships. At that age, I was never that good.

I have often thought about encouraging my boys to move abroad for better opportunities and broaden their horizons. The real question is "where"? Despite the UK's issues, I don't see any better options, especially now the US has become even more of a "basket-case".

I suspect the "Overton Window" of political acceptability will mean these CGT rates are here to stay regardless of which party forms the next government.

Another issue seems to be that it's largely self-reported and HMRC enforcement can only really scratch the surface. For example, using Land Registry data and cross-comparing it to taxpayer records, looking for undisclosed properties being sold which weren’t CGT exempt as the sellers’ main homes.

Wasn't there a spike in CGT tax-take prior to the allowance changes? In the long-run people still need to sell assets (or wait until IHT kicks in), so the tax should have its desired effect.
