I have experienced the system from within. Both as a patient, as a relative, and as a psychiatrist. It's not perfect. Diagnoses are not tokens of truth and they are not perfect. Drugs or psychotherapy are not always helpful and can both be harmful.

It is important to separate psychiatry (as a concept and knowledge system) from the psychiatric system, ie how health care systems allow psychiatry to be practised in real life.

The psychiatric health care system is not what defines psychiatry.

I acknowledge that people have been harmed, and I accept that the system is broken in many places around the world.

But this is rarely a "them and us" discussion. Many psychiatrists have or have had mental illness. Even more have relatives and friends with mental illness.
