Do The Sea, The Sea but you have to eat the lunches as you go. Eat-along-an-Iris.

Magnificent. Or unforgivable. I can't decide which.

Oh no! So sorry to hear this. I've taken so much from the show - a real highlight of the week. You've been a brilliant curator and presenter, with some really memorable interviews as well as countless hours of wonderful music.

Yes - watching that too. I went to see Graham Norton's show recorded in the late 90s and Amanda Donohoe smoked like a chimney throughout her interview. Absolutely no sign of it in the edit. Made me wonder when it was finally stopped.

I was sitting in the window seat of the Pret on Piccadilly a couple of years ago when he walked past - absurdly beautiful and charismatic, seemed to warp time around him so we were all for a moment in his Terry and Julie London. RIP

I'm actually enjoying it quite a lot - there are lots of beautiful things in it. Monday morning cynicism!

Coincidentally, I'm reading Possession atm and while I'm enjoying it in an eighties nostalgia kind of way, it's not exactly a hoot. Tin ear for dialogue too.

Oh yes - Spark is much more like it. And that's exactly it re pompous ass Fowles - the total absence of humour.
August 4, 2025 at 8:03 AM
I remember The Magus being like a flashy, sexed-up Le Grand Meaulnes, which I loved, so took against Fowles a bit. Brother loved it and kept trying to get parents to take us to Greece. Tried A Maggot, and found it hard going - wore its learning very heavily and cleverness kept getting in the way.
