President & CEO of The Center for Victims of Torture (@cvt.org). Human rights, humanitarianism, international justice n’ stuff.
It’s strangely appropriate that Britain’s Imperial War Museum is housed in “Bedlam” - a notorious former mental asylum. Humanity is still failing to learn from the bloody wars, industrialized mass murder and atrocities of the last century.

Getting caffeinated, cultured, and catching up with Ryan D’Souza all at once inside the British Museum (the most impressive collection of stolen goods in the world).

Always great to catch up with @amnesty.org colleagues in London. Amnesty International are an essential component of the global struggle to uphold human rights and humanitarianism.

Illegitimate, unpopular and unable to govern, #Myanmar’s military junta prefers to bomb civilians and stage sham elections instead.

For years @cvt.org’s IDREAM project worked fostering resilience amongst exiled human rights defenders. Check out the story of the quilt some of them made. www.cvt.org/articles/fab...

If you are in Minneapolis this week, as I am, the only place to be on Thursday morning at 8am is @cvt.org’s 40th anniversary “Restoring Hope Breakfast!” Come join the human rights defenders, humanitarian workers and just downright decent folks who support CVT. give.cvt.org/event/2025-r...

“Know your rights” cards handed out at the #NoKings rally in Brooklyn today.

Scenes from #NoKings protest in Brooklyn. Just one of 2700 protests across the US🇺🇸, involving 7 million people who reject creeping authoritarianism. So much humour and imagination, alongside the indignation, in the massive crowd. ❌👑❌

We must end this detestable commerce in human cruelty. @cvt.org is proud to partner with @amnesty.org @omegarf.bsky.social and others in pursuit of a #TortureFreeTradeTreaty

Mother of Exiles: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…” What would Emma Lazarus write about ICE or Alligator Alcatraz if she were alive today?

Thanks Sydney for an extremely brief but intensely rewarding visit.

It is also immoral and unconscionably cruel.

One of Sydney’s sadder public memorials: for the thousands of Irish orphan girls taken from workhouses and transported to Australia during An Gorta Mór, the Irish famine. The scheme was overseen by Earl Grey. Another good reason not to drink that abominable brand of tea.☕️🇮🇪

An honour to deliver a keynote on “Poison ideas: Universities and other antidotes to authoritarianism.” Thanks to ABC’s Big Ideas for recording and DASSH for inviting me to Sydney. As Madiba said: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

Good to be back in Sydney and interviewed by ABC Radio National about the UN at 80, mass atrocity prevention, diplomacy, international justice and… the recognition of the state of Palestine.🇺🇳🇵🇸

I played a small role helping evacuate @skateistan.bsky.social staff from Afghanistan when the Taliban took power. Amazing to finally meet Fatima and her son in Australia, 4 years later. She was the brave and inspiring teacher featured in the “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone…” documentary.

It was a great honor to share a stage with Javier Garcia, CEO of World Central Kitchen and other laureates at the @rooseveltinstitute.org’s 2025 Freedom Awards. WCK, @CVT.org @teenvogue.com and all the award winners show that a better world is possible.

Such a great honour to meet Anne Roosevelt this weekend and accept the Freedom from Fear Award on behalf of @CVT.org. Anne and the @rooseveltinstitute.org keep the flame of “the Four Freedoms” alive across the generations.

This weekend I will represent @cvt.org and accept the 2025 Freedom From Fear Award from @rooseveltinstitute.org. We are humbled to be among these amazing recipients (including World Central Kitchen) who refuse to be cowed by creeping authoritarianism and are standing up for human rights!

I’m trying.

The problem is not refugees. The dictators and armed conflicts that force people to flee are the problem. We need humanitarian solutions, not xenophobic politicians who scapegoat the vulnerable as they cosy up to those responsible for the global displacement crisis.

We all need to slow down every now and then. I’m heading off the grid in Costa Rica for a few days.🇨🇷
