Just a thought. How does that sit with Federalisation in the 1950s to enforce civil rights judgements? Didn’t Eisenhower federalise National Guard units to stop them interfering under state governor instructions as well as to provide an alternative that was less provocative than the Regular Army?

Tony Judt wrote something about all real history being disturbing as we have (sensibly) built a framework to understand what happens in the world around us and history shows us that reality is far more complicated than that model.

Most effective use of little quotes was on my copy of Ian Bank’s the Wasp Factory. Not just the cover but several pages of contradictory quotes (‘torture porn rubbish’ to Fay Weldon’s ‘Banks is the great white hope of British literature). Showed you were about this read something a bit strange.
