This week the town of Stromness – where our Orkney campus sits – is having its annual “Shopping Week” festival. Yesterday the flagstones behind the art gallery were given over to a chalk painting competition for the kids!

Here are two of my favourites.

Ooh, I think xkcd has provided a new second-favourite statistics quote. (the favourite remains George Box on models)

1/5: Did you know that the size of a barrel of oil - something that in the days of pipelines and supertankers we still talk about in the millions or billions - is the size of one of these barrels from 1860s Pennsylvania? But it's older than that.

Driving "home" for Christmas; Scotland, you are looking especially gorgeous today. Despite, some people would say, the Beauly-Denny transmission line 😊

The shutdown of the UK's last coal power plant this week is a major milestone, if not a terribly consequential one (because the amount of coal used in the last 4-5 years is pretty tiny).

Randall Munroe has, of course, thought to calculate something new...

Would you like this to be the view from your office window? Do you care about #oceanography and/or #offshore #wind power, especially in weather that is much worse than this?

If so, we have a #PhD project for you!
www.hw.ac.uk/uk/schools/e...

Based in Orkney. Deadline 26th April.

In case anybody was wondering about the size of such things... This is the environmental statement for a major #offshore #wind farm - now donated to our campus library.

Four boxes of files, somewhere north of 10,000 pages.
