Moralising re “motivation” is 💯 ineffective. But as Corrigan himself admits, he’s about narrative, not evidence. *Evidence* shows environment & inequality determine health. But *narrative* of “undeserving patient” is handy to segment, cut & gatekeep healthcare into predictably profitable “offerings”

Paul Corrigan warned that the NHS could no longer be run as a “nationalised industry” and changing the way people looked after themselves at home was as important as updating GP services.
“The amount of care that is going to be necessary in the next 10 to 15 years with an ageing and sicker population will overwhelm the current model of the National Health Service — not might do, will,” Corrigan said in his first public appearance since he was appointed to help Wes Streeting, the health secretary, develop a 10-year reform plan.

“Policy is really feeble and people don’t do much because of policy. They do things because of narrative, and they do things because stories move them to do things,” he told an event at the Institute for Government think tank.
Corrigan, who pioneered the introduction of giving patients a choice of hospitals under the Blair government, argued that encouraging patients to use smartphones and other technology to manage their own health was central to saving the NHS.
Pointing out that the NHS carried out more than a million consultations a day, he said: “In 2035, [of] those million consultations, every single one needs to be different”.
He said it was “almost certain that technology would be held by the patient and would hold much more of their health and healthcare. more involvement in their health and the healthcare than they have now. ..
