I recently moved from Houston to Virginia and am a lifelong Democrat. I am horrified and saddened by Trump’s assault on our federal agencies and civil service. I love gardening with native plants and seeing all the insects they support.

My mother wrote this poem in 1964. She grew up in Mussolini’s Italy and lived in Rome during WWII. I keep thinking of her words as I struggle through the Trump era, whether she meant this as a political statement or not.

After the snow melted I am back to digging invasive liriope, vinca, and English ivy out of a garden bed along the edge of our yard. From a distance it looks like a nice rustic area. Why did they fill it with plants from Asia and Europe? I can’t wait to replace them with Virginia natives.
