Endwalker pretty much ties up the story, Dawntrail is kinda a vacation for the WoL after the events of Endwalker then going into the seeds of new adventures and antagonists.

Yes, 1 was fine but is a bit less colourful and end game can be a bit tedious if you've had poor drops and don't have good ways to exploit weaknesses(More HP is harder, right?) 2 is the most borderlands borderlands, 3 has smoother gameplay... I recommend 2 and the wounderlands spinoff.

I don't know for certain but I vaguely suspect its from something related to speed runs, there's been a few speed run optimization things where you're supposed to play as the female character or use a glitch to swap to the female character... apparently most bugtesting was done on the male character
