A 2018 column “The Irish For… How the Vikings influenced the Irish language” by one Darach Ó Séaghdha in The Journal. A paragraph from that column saying: Ispín: Certain Norse words entered the English and Irish languages at the same time (bád for a boat, from bát), and these could be mistaken by the untrained eye as borrowed from béarla. Others bear little relation to the English equivalent, such as the Irish for sausage – íspen in the old Norse. The humble ispín is a delight when fried or grilled, but some Norsemen preferred to boil it in a thin, pale broth that they called kadall.

Firstly, the change has practical real world impact and effects on long-standing employees and impairs the prospects of prospective employees. The president-elect herself would not have met the standard she is setting until well into adulthood. Secondly, one wonders how immigrants or members of non-Gaelic speaking traditions on this island could go about obtaining employment at the Àras. Patrick Sims-Williams ‘Celtic Britain’ in pre-Roman archaeology, reconsidered Summary. For forty years archaeologists have avoided referring to pre-Roman Britain and its inhabitants as ‘Celtic’ on the grounds that contemporaries never described them as such. This is incorrect. The second-century BC astronomer Hipparchus quotes Pytheas (c. 320 BC) as having referred to Britons as ‘Keltoi’. This is significant because Pytheas is the only writer before Julius Caesar known to have travelled in Britain. It does not prove that the Britons were wholly similar to Caesar’s Gauls, who were called ‘“Celtae” in their own language’. Nevertheless, it removes a long-standing terminological obstacle to a balanced evaluation of cross-Channel similarities and differences. Since Pytheas came from Marseille, he is likely to have been well informed about Celts and their language even before he started his voyage.

A comparison. Shot using Olympus E-M5 mk. III. The only change between the two screenshots is changing the “daylight” (“światło dzienne”) to “custom” (“niestandardowy”) illuminant type control. CCT supposedly stays at 4201 K but the preview is visibly different.

Is this distinction between deuterotonic as·beir < *exs … beret(i) (with -s) vs protot. ·eper < eg·beret(i) (no -s) a broadly accepted thing?
(…) many PIE adverbs do exhibit an *–s alternating with Ø, notably *eǵʰ-s, *sub-s, *h₂ed-s, *ud-s etc. This *–s, apparently not a part of the root but some kind of desinence, might have played a distinct role in the PIE language, most likely signalling a free-standing adverb as opposed to a (future) preposition or preverb. In later stages, this role was mostly lost and the two forms merged, with either of the two becoming the default representation. If at some stage there existed both univerbisation such as *eǵʰ-bʰereti ‘brings out > pronounces etc.’, cf. OIr. epert ‘s/he said’ and juxtaposed *eǵʰs (...) bʰereti with probably the same meaning ‘brings out’, it is only a matter of time before loose particles cease to function as such (as it happened in Classical Greek, Latin, Classical Old Irish, Slavic and Baltic and most later Indo-Iranian languages) and common juxtapositions with *eǵʰs bereti would be treated as by-forms or equivalents of univerbised forms, with no clear role of the *–s- element. Historically it really just meant:

crann ar a raibhe an t-éan chraoibh ‘the tree on whose branch the bird was’

lit. ‘tree on which/whose was the bird branch’

craoibh ‘branch’ is in dative after ‘ar’ 3/n
fragment of page 275 of McKenna’s edition of “Bardic Syntactical Tracts”, it shows several examples of ‘whose’-relative clauses, including ‘crann do bhuail an fear chraoibh’ ‘the tree whose branch I struck’ or ‘crann ar a raibhe an t-éan chraoibh’ ‘the tree on whose branch the bird was’.

My explanation of the use of (in)direct relative clauses with adverbials in #irish #grammar.

Written on a forum that I _don’t_ want to advertise due to one active toxic user making it not be a safe space. But IMO the explanation is worth sharing.

The reason fáth, caoi take indirect clause is: they are nouns that do not work as adverbs. This indirect clause hides the historical presence of a preposition. While you can say: sin í an chaoi a raibh sé, an fáth a raibh raibh sé ann, you cannot say *bhí sé an chaoi sin, *bhí sé ann an fáth sin. Caoi, fáth aren’t adverbs. You have to say sth like ‘sa chaoi sin’. Nua-Chorpas has some native examples of ‘an chaoi ina’ too. It’s a hidden prepositional rel. clause. Same with fáth in historical data, DIL: • in fath ar nách and roadnacht Cormac, the reason (on which) C. was not buried there • in fáth forar crochad Ísu, the reason (on which) Jesus was hanged • ga fáth 'ma ra molais in fer sain? why (what r. about which) did you praise that man? FGB gives an fáth um a ndearna é for ‘the reason why he did it’. True adverbials take direct rel. clause – no indirection/overt pronoun referring back to the antecedent: • conas atá tú? • nuair a bhí mé ann • ar an mbord atá sé • sin mar a bhí sé • an bhliain/lá a bhí mé / a raibh mé Note that you can substitute the antecedent into the clause: bhí mé ann lá…, tá sé ar an mbord. & note an bhliain a raibh mé & that Connacht dialects use indirect more often with time clauses. Here, you can say either bhí mé ann an bhliain sin and sa bhliain sin. True adverbials take direct relative clause in Irish, and indirect relative clauses are used for nouns (of manner, reason, place, time) which do not work adverbially on their own.
