It's not the first business in Japan to offer a flexible approach to work. Microsoft and others have experimented with four-day workweeks. One t-shirt company lets workers set their own hours - a model that's brought it much success.

There have been several high-profile cases in Japan recently where courts have overturned asylum denials. E.g., a court in Osaka approved a gay North African man's request after immigration denied it.

Six years after making headlines for coming out as a douchebag for living in Japan while refusing to learn Japanese so as not to puncture its “mystery,” author Pico Iyer is doubling down, calling Japanese sentences “mongrel” in an article The NY Times probably paid him good money to write.

"Eurofascism" is a term that is increasingly mentioned not just by the Russian propaganda but also by the official Kremlin

If earlier Russian propaganda lied that "the war with Russia was started&waged by the U.S.through Ukraine,"now, the "instigators of the war"are the EU led by Great Britain⤵️

Vietnam has been one of the most pro-US countries in the world, in part because of concern about China. Nevertheless, Trump slapped Vietnam with a 46% tariff, falsely calling it “reciprocal.”

This week, Vietnam signed cooperation agreements with China, including on production and supply chains.

I never took advantage of tax-free shopping in Japan and know few people who do. I think while some people might grumble, eliminating it would do nothing to dent tourism. It'd also be a huge political win domestically. I don't see a downside.

since I grew up during the Cold War it stuns me every time that the only Japanese politicians with actual, practical, positive proposals are the communists.
Japanese Communist Party (JCP) politician Yoshida Ayaka said recently that sanitary products should be free for women "like toilet paper." At least one prominent hard-right figure bashed her for the idea, leading to a pile-on - and a flood of automated death threats.

That was the contention of the expert I cited (Ako Mari). Her reasoning is simple: real estate in Japan is dominated by men who don't do chores. That's reflected in the size of the average Japanese kitchen *shrinking* since the 1980s.
Due to "sexism" is provocative but it is true that kitchens in Japan suck. Also it amazes me what old school housewives can produce on a single gas cooker and the corner of a narrow bench
