Very important. About 20 yrs ago, when working with underage violent sexual offenders aged 10-16, psychotherapists found that empathy isn't a trait obtained by birth, but needs to be taught. If this doesn't happen early, it'd take years of therapy - and after teenage age, it's almost unfixable.

I'd say we also fear cities in darkness - blackouts, war, the postapocalyptic, abandoned.
I keep the old, also in SF. I like to put the paranormal / supernatural into modernism.
