I am standing on line for the Shinkansen and felt this deeply.

There are lots of oppressive authoritarian countries that don't draw the US' ire like Venezuela has for decades. Hungary, Singapore, Saudi Arabia. They are genrally willing to play ball with US empire, though.

We laugh at blarant agitprop, but this works on a lot of Americans. Vague associations and "fill in the blank" thinking is all it takes to demonize someone as a terrorist.

I must disagree here. It's not just the oil, it's also that a Venezuelan left-wing party exists in the American Empire's sphere of influence in defiance of attempts to prevent that. Same with US' eternal hate of Cuba and Iran. They spat in the US' face and the hegemon can't stand that.

I have a coworker who calls himself a "proud centrist." He thinks invading Iraq was justified because of the invasion of Kuwait. He believes Venezuela has "a little mismanaged oil." He is an attorney. They think we're really stupid, and they're often right.

Isn't it a good thing, though? Every dollar the US military spends changing plaques is a dollar they're not spending blowing up children for being next to a guy who had dinner with someone related to a "terrorist." The American empire is a brutal, thuggish thing, so why not dispense with euphemisms?
