Everybody knows that Baltic countries produce some of the most successful animated films. But very few know the secret ingredient of this success. To shed some light on this mystery Riga International Film Festival organized Baltic Animation Meet-Up and invited me to speak.

At the BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER Q&A the director Edward Berger and stars Colin Farrell and Fala Chen talked about their process of making this film about addiction in Macau.
For me Macau was the true star of the film - gorgeous, moody, mysterious and made me want to see more of it.

At the FRANKENSTEIN Q&A director Guillermo del Toro said he was preparing to make this film for 25 years.
He might have been overprepared. The film was gorgeous in all departments, each actor gave their 100% but I missed surprise, spontaneity and the mess that comes with creating Art or Life.

GOOD BOY is not a scary movie although it is marketed as horror. It is a metaphorical drama of existential anxiety. The dog Indie is a stunning actor and I really did not appreciate that in the appendix the director revealed the secrets of Indie's magic.
The movie certainly has a great poster.

And here it is: the US did not make it to the Global Retirement Report's list of the top 10 countries to retire to, but Latvia did!

Last night I went to see FIXED at Paris Theater, a Netflix release. Director - the legendary Genndy Tartakovsky - was there for the Q&A.
The film's fixation is on a dog's balls as if losing them means losing one's essence. But even without balls you can still write poetry, have desire and get it up.
