It is with great sadness that we announce the death of the 7th Editor of the BJA, William Fitch (1937-2024). Bill took over the editorship of the BJA in 1983 & held the post with distinction until 1987. The BJA sends sincere condolences to his family.

Iron deficiency – defined as plasma ferritin < 100 lg.l-1 or 100–300 lg.l-1 where transferrin saturation was < 20% – was not associated with an increased risk of all-cause postoperative infectious complication, relative to an iron replete state.
