It's got to the point that surgeries can't even afford to hire more GPs, leading to many newly qualified GPs being unable to secure a job (which is perverse with the increasing difficulty in accessing GP care at present).

It sucks, but under the current contract they're not funded to provide these services, so they're all run at a net loss to the GP surgery.
GP surgeries are struggling as the cost of providing core services has increased without an increase in funding, so they're cutting back on any other services.
