Fear is just inherent to the flesh. You can’t fully train it away, much to the chagrin of COs everywhere.

Fear, anger, love, regret. As much as those higher than you’d like to control it —as much as you’d— it’s decided for you, through mechanisms outside your understanding.
The answer? You don't do anything. It runs counter to everything you've been taught, drilled into your head, and done your entire life, but what can you do? There's nothing to act on, there are no solutions to be had. Whatever you try might make it worse, or lead to a terrible outcome.

you look behind you, at your room you’re leaving.

stacked boxes —inside them files and hard drives— haphazardly strewn about. you remember the contents of a box; your botched job, years before, with people you don’t associate with anymore.

you don’t know why you rememeber it.

>: it still remembers, despite thinking the memories’ve all been overwritten. it’s hazy, though; question if it even happened, but somewhere it knows it did

>: as much as it wishes, it never ever goes away. it forgets everything, except the worst of it

Connected closely through cables and wires, but never close enough. A dull, electric feeling, not unlike ice through your veins.

They teach you early on—during INDOC—to not apologize for your failures.

They *are* still failures, of course, but 'sorry' is an inefficient use of your time. It's much better to spend the time immediately existing after your fuckup in looking for solutions to that fuckup.
