Folks not knowing that Small Business Saturday was actually created by AmEx and being mad that AmEx is part of Small Business Saturday is hilarious to me. It’s all capitalism folks.

But also, the idea that holidays need to look and feel a certain way is a by product of white supremacy and patriarchy. When you break the need to conform an oddball holiday experience feels better.

The argument that folks don’t gather anymore because no one has a space is tired. My grandma got the family in a one bedroom apartment and cooked up a holiday dinner on a farmworkers salary every year. 30+ people crammed in sitting on the floor eating off paper plates. It take heart not space.

Every time I try to plan something for our first holiday season in the new bookstore space I remember that this is also our first year without my grandma and I get a little stuck. Grief is hard.
