I've now heard from two authors who paid for this scam. Both were referred to Upwork for payment of the fee, both said the payee was Nigerian, and in both cases the scammer demanded access to the authors' Amazon accounts. So this may be a hijacking scam, like the one that steals your Facebook page.

Watch out for out-of- the-blue emails from supposed marketing experts claiming they just happened on your book & are eager to promote it. This is something I'm seeing more and more of. Marketing scams aren't new, but this is a new twist.
