This morning, she died in the hospital, becoming the seventh casualty of yesterday’s massive Russian attack
Her husband, Valeriy, was killed on April 26, 1986, during the explosion of Chernobyl’s fourth reactor.

And now, nearly 40 years later, Russian shelling has claimed the life of his widow.

For sure, it's true that a. a lot of Ukrainians want to return and b. the Ukr government want them to return! The issue is more the visas keep getting short-term extensions that create a cliff edge, when the war is not close to ending. I wrote about it here. www.opendemocracy.net/en/ukraine-w...

It also ignores the reality of an unstable world and ignores that not all asylum seeking people are fleeing war - as well as ignoring that even if a war ends, the country might not be safe for everyone to go home to (even if they want to).

That kind of is the policy on the homes for Ukraine visa - it is not as it stands a route to settled status. It’s a precedent for this new, horrible, policy.

Had a further thought. The UK and EU already have temporary status for Ukrainians with no specific routes to settlement. The UK has excluded Ukrainians from long residence rules. So there is precedent.

We are one of the few countries that recruits under-18 year olds and I think the only NATO country that recruits 16 year olds
