📊Personally endorsing values tied to defence of family reputation was associated with greater coordinative efforts, whereas endorsing self-promotion and retaliation was associated with weaker engagement in coordination.

🔍We assessed both individual and family facets of honour, and examined the cultural logic of honour from subjective endorsement of cultural values to intersubjective perceptions of normative values in one’s society, and further extending to societal-level cultural phenomena.

🌍Nine of the 13 societies—Spain, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus (both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities), Lebanon, Egypt and Morocco—were in the Mediterranean region, where the cultural logic of honour plays a role in psychological tendencies and social behaviours.

🌍Our work informs institutions that can (or not) facilitate cooperation, offering insights for researchers in designing social dilemma structures and for policymakers and organizational managers on rule configurations to effectively manage conflicts of interest.
