By having mechanics partially dictate the melody’s direction, they also influence improvisation in parts that aren’t directly tied to those mechanics.

I’m working on MeloMisterio!
I’ve been polishing older stages to match the direction I set with the newer ones.

I wanted to reduce the number of buttons used, so I chose to separate the actions based on whether you tilt the left stick or not.
#indiedev #UE5
Melody-playing action part 3 — Attack
It’s assigned to the top and left ABXY buttons.
Pressing the top button raises the melody, and pressing the left button lowers it.
The buttons are the same as for Dash, but you don’t tilt the left stick when attacking.

It’s fun to keep playing syncopation, but it’s a bit tricky unless the area is clear.
#gamedev #indiegame
Improvised performance part 28 — on the off-beat.

Also with the dash, the higher button raises the melody note, and the lower button lowers it.
#indiedev
Melody-playing action part 2 — Jump
It’s assigned to the right and bottom ABXY buttons.
Pressing the right button makes the melody go up, and pressing the bottom button makes the melody go down.

I really like rhythms where the meter and the repeating pattern don’t line up.
#gamedev
Improvised performance part 27 — with a motif built on two notes and a 1:2 rhythm.

I realized that I hadn’t properly introduced the actions…
#indiedev #UE5
Melody-playing action part 1 (belatedly) — Dash
It’s assigned to the top and left ABXY buttons.
Pressing the top button makes the melody go up, and pressing the left button makes the melody go down.

I really like the feel of this 3-beat rhythm.

Improvised performance part 26 — with a 2:1 rhythm motif.

I’m working on MeloMisterio!
Because I want to make sure it runs at 30 fps on Steam Deck.

You need to think about how you’re going to control it before you jump, since you have to operate it before you fall.
#gamedev #indiegame
Melody-based mechanic part 9 — control the wall while in the air.

I realized I hadn’t done anything with triplets yet.
#indiedev #UE5
Improvised performance part 25 — with a triplet motif.

The camera is set lower because it needs to show the underside.
#gamedev #indiegame
Melody-based mechanic part 8 — rotating platforms to cover the hole.

December 4, 2025 at 1:24 AM
I went with this after thinking about what to do for today’s performance while playing the melody.
#indiedev #UE5
Improvised performance part 24 — with a bouncy, jumping feel.
#gamedev #indiegame
December 2, 2025 at 11:06 PM
It uses a dotted rhythm, which gives it a bit more drive.
#gamedev #indiegame
Melody-playing enemy part 3 — its melody has a distinctive rhythm.

December 1, 2025 at 11:03 PM
I just started to feel that way while playing.

Improvised performance part 23 — With a sense of anticipation for the start of the stage.

I’m working on MeloMisterio!
After upgrading to UE 5.7, I ran into an issue where the BGM stopped playing, but I managed to fix it (probably).

I used to show it as “Goal,” but I switched to a musical expression since it fits the theme better.
#indiedev #UE5
Goal — You clear the stage when you reach this point. I used Fine and a final barline to indicate it.

When the checkpoint sound plays, the rhythm part drops out, so you match your timing to it.
#gamedev #indiegame
Improvised performance part 22 — Stopping in time with the checkpoint sound.

Be careful when you stand on the edge of the platform — it spins pretty fast there.
#indiedev #UE5
Rhythm-based mechanic part 3 — the platform rotates with the rhythm.

The note sounds are a counter-melody, so they first try to move opposite to your melody.
#gamedev #indiegame
Improvised performance part 21 — First, I tried to make the Note Item sounds as high as possible.

The attack only hits at the moment the sphere expands, so you can actually get pretty close (though I still got hit…).
#indiedev #UE5
Melody-playing enemy part 2 — It stays still and attacks in a fixed rhythm.
#gamedev #indiegame
November 25, 2025 at 1:21 AM
I actually practiced this one a bit.
#gamedev #musicgame
Improvised performance part 20 — Practicing turns (like Czerny’s Op. 299 No. 4, with no BGM).

You go right and the melody goes up; you go left and the melody goes down.
#gamedev #indiegame
Melody-based mechanic part 7 — Slopes that move right or left based on the melody going up or down.
#indiedev #UE5
November 22, 2025 at 12:14 AM
It might have ended up a bit plain because there are so many lower notes.
#indiedev #UE5
Improvised performance part 19 — defeat enemies to play harmonies.
