I was pleasantly surprised by fact the very second Carnacki story is about a hoax

I liked Carnacki's "sciencey" approach to haunting but otherwise I wasn't particulary impressed with relaxed tone and overall writing.

The only detective fiction from that time that I read is obviously Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The Gateway of the Monster is a peculiar gateway (hehe) into this part of the genre.
