Not just new laws, but also constitutional amendments that protect voting rights, privacy rights, ensure an independent justice department, proportional representation, etc. We can’t ever rely again on norms, traditions, and laws that clearly be ignored while a slow judiciary struggles to respond.

I read and deeply value your columns. I’m curious, though, about why you think Americans are not hearing and reading broader condemnations of the Republican Party that is not just refusing to hold Trump to account, but actively enabling and actively supporting Trump’s anti-constitutional efforts.

I sincerely appreciate the depth of thought and comprehensive research that you use in writing your posts, and I value the chance to read and learn from them. They help to fill what I realize is a painful gap in my understanding of American history, and I forward your pieces to lots of people.
