Part of me kinda wishes that Ch 5 also dropped with 3 and 4, because considering that the hidden prophecy in Ch 4 reveals that Asgore will likely be the boss of Ch 5, the chapter will probably give us a more complete view of his character and why exactly he’s the way he is in DR.

(That being said I do agree with your initial assertion that Kris wouldn’t have such a negative outlook on him that they wouldn’t want to call him their father. If anything considering Kris’s implied guilt over the Dess incident I wouldn’t be surprised if they blame themselves for his current state)

I don’t think Asgore’s a bad person, but I do think his repeated advances towards Toriel cross over into stalker territory, and if not then they heavily skirt the line.

He’s been making these kinds of advances repeatedly since before the game even started (flowers in the trash). He “leaves her alone” after the church scene but looking at the big picture he hasn’t “left her alone” at all (he even plans on making another advance on her the next day at the festival).

This is a very rose-tinted reading of the church scene. He bursts out of the trees and catches her off guard while she’s in a position where she can’t easily turn him down or remove herself from the situation without causing a scene and potentially embarrassing Kris in front of their new friend.
