4/ Naushad Forbes on the importance of funding firms: "The right R&D pipeline in firms will act as a pull on the public research system like no other. It is inadequate investment in innovation and R&D by Indian industry that is the single factor hindering our national innovation system."

4/ Former FS & China scholar Shyam Saran: "In discussions relating to econ relations, one Chinese interlocutor said that India should realise that "China can do without India, but India could not do without China," pointing to its inability to do without Chinese intermediate & components."

3/ How are Indian institutions placed? The top ranking org is the Indian Institute of Science (a +100 years old public institute that was initially set up by Jamsetji Tata) at #205. Of the top 25 Indian institutes in this list, only two are private firms -- the rest are all state institutions:

2/ One of the most striking things about going through this data is the rise of Chinese (& Asian) orgs. Contrast the top 10 'Research Leading' institutes list from 2016 and 2025:

In 2016, there was only one 🇨🇳 institute in the top 10. By 2025, this number had jumped to eight out of 10.

2/ Import tariff cuts offered by GoI were "considered inadequate" bc the 🇺🇸 wants "steep concessions in almost all areas, incl agri products." Lang from this Amiti Sen report is striking: consultations are being held in 🇮🇳 on the "extent of market openings the industry & farm sectors can handle."
