Think I am talking about a different kind of "sensibilism"
May 19, 2025 at 3:42 PM
Also I mean I do think part of it is that the timeline from "moderates gain control of the Labour party from the left" and "moderates get into government" was much shorter than it was last time round, and therefore the think tank ecosystem had less time to adjust
May 19, 2025 at 3:41 PM
Think I'm mainly describing a slightly earlier period when there was genuinely a lot of intellectual energy at the ASI; right now the smart people on the right have moved to/set up cross-partisan institutions
May 19, 2025 at 3:39 PM
Not sure I get what you mean re "sensibles against economic liberalism"?
May 19, 2025 at 3:37 PM
, while those on the centre/centre left increasingly came to self-identify as sensible and negatively polarised themselves against any new ideas
May 19, 2025 at 3:35 PM
To put it slightly differently, think dealing with crises requires new thinking and breaking old consensuses, and during this period feel that basically people of the "edgy contrarian" sort basically self-sorted into either the right or the anti-Blair/anti-Starmer left
May 19, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Think the answer to the former question is partly about the capture of centrist institutions by sensibilist thought, which then finds itself unable to deal with major crises/significant deviations from the norm. Systems tend to ossification over time
May 19, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Not sure the answers are the same tbh. The conservative party may be intellectually vapid at the moment but there is lots of thinking on the right going on that it could engage with if it wanted to

No because neoliberalism was pro-rentier whereas YIMBYism is about reducing their power to command scarcity rents

Or they just don't want it at all and are using this argument as an excuse

Pleased to contribute to @smfthinktank.bsky.social's collection on this important topic

Starmer's growth mission has promised more 'pounds in your pocket'... But what about more babies?

A declining birth rate is among the UK's most pressing issues.

👇Notable centre + left voices are calling for policies to make it easier for people to have the children they want.

Is the red wall the same group of seats as "seats where Labour came first and Reform second"?
February 5, 2025 at 11:06 AM
Yes but the argument was that if people moved out of other sectors into construction, wouldn't this leave labour shortages in those other sectors
January 29, 2025 at 12:49 PM
In other sectors, not construction, hope this helps
January 29, 2025 at 12:44 PM
I don't think "we should have listened to the people arguing against a self-evidently terrible policy" is a good argument for the idea that we should listen to people arguing against all policies

I don't think high skilled immigration is particularly unpopular

Automation and productivity increases can be used to reduce the demand for labour
