Adagio held her hands open awkwardly, not quite understanding how to reciprocate, but she would in time. She looks down at the broken pendant and hums.

❝ There's no need. It's magic was absorbed into my soul. I don't need to it channel my powers anymore. It's a part of me now. ❞
She hugged her tightly for a moment as she sobbed. Once she calmed down a little she pulled away and held out the pendant for Adagio.

"Here. . . I didn't know how to repair it but. . ."
❝ I am. You don't need to worry. ❞

Adagio shook her head reassuringly. She was unsure of how to handle this. People usually weren't 'nice' to her either, probably because she never really put in the work to be nice back.

But... she deserved that comfort at least. The siren lightly patted the -

"People who are like that are scum. . . I always remember the people who are kinda to me, who help me. Perhaps it's because people often aren't nice to me but. . . I always remember."

She just started to sob in relief.

"I'm glad you're okay. . ."
❝ That's what people do, isn't it? They come into each other's lives, entertain each other for a while, and then leave. ❞

Adagio explained the world, as she had always known it. But her struggling tears were starting to convince her otherwise.

❝ ...But perhaps, I may be wrong. ❞

Adagio tried not to face her. She was actively fighting the chance to. But she couldn't not hear her either; not listen to those words.

Come on, Adagio, she thought. Play it up like you always do. Your life is a stage and they don't get to see you cry. They don't get to. They can't. Because what -
The corners of her mouth trembled into a tearful smile.

"You seriously just have the worst timing."

She wiped her eyes, voice shaking but warm.

"But this… this might be the first time I’m actually glad you do."

She slowly walked to her, fighting back tears. She shakes a little.
❝ ...the pendent... ❞

Adagio narrows her eyes. Was that really what was left of it? It would explain much, but, in any case, she didn't realize anyone would actually notice her death. The siren thought she went out with a whisper.

❝ By now, I would have thought you'd forgotten me, little siren. ❞

...That.

Adagio wasn't expecting...

That.

Her cool and calculating expression shatters in that moment. Since farther than she can remember, this was the first time she'd seen someone this worried about her. The siren narrows her gaze and looks to the side.

❝ When I thought I lost you... I -
The pan clattered to the floor. Sunset’s breath hitched, half-laugh, half-sob.

“You’re- I thought"

She stumbled forward, still stunned.

“Do you have any idea how much I-"

The words broke before she could finish.
❝ Grilled cheese for dinner. I heard you were dead, but I didn't think it'd be this bad... ❞

In the doorway. Practically leaning on the thing, as someone would a crutch. It's clear the humor is just a means of concealment.

She fights back gritted teeth. As it turns out, returning from death hurts.

She was holding her pendant.

❝ How ironic. The weapon, the drug. It's a part of me now. Not as a thing I can choose to wield, but just as much a part of me as my own hand.

And yet, I don't fear it... I fear what 𝑰 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒅𝒐 𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒕... I fear the sadistic joy I get out of turning people into puppets... I fear myself. ❞

The ground rumbles.

Then, cleaving space in two, a figure appears, enveloped in a reddened glow. Death couldn't hold her, and she simply came back stronger.

With wings aglow and feet hovering just above the ground, Adagio emerges from the Spirit World, determined, and perhaps...

"Aren't you angry? Don't you want to yell? Scream?"

Adagio's eyes grew hazier, and the entire spirit world just seemed to drown itself out. What point was there to anything? Nothing. Nothing at all. Her own spirit's body felt useless. The fight was already over.

But the face-stealer grew upset -

Adagio walked aimlessly. Perhaps that was the fate of all spirits who were aimless in life. As is in the land of the living, so too were they in death. Such a thing did not need a face. And that was what made her excellent prey.

"What a life you must have lived."

A voice hissed into her ear. The -

She looked. . . Horrified. Sick.

"N-no. . No. . . You can't be. I can fix this. I can do this. There's so much we haven't done. I can heal you."

She was panicking as she hugged Adagio. Kissing her hand to activate her healing magic, ignoring the blood filling her lungs. -

The crash of waves pulled her out of her haze, the salt air sharp in her lungs.

She stopped short, eyes catching on something small, half-buried in the sand.

A faint glint beneath the moonlight.

Her pendant sits alone on a beach, cracked down the middle. Orange faintly taints its dirtied surface and no glow exudes from it. It is utterly without life.

Sunset’s eyes blinked open, the sting of bandages pulling at her shoulder.

Her body was heavy, but alive. She sat up slowly, exhaling a shaky breath.

Relief almost took her, until the silence pressed in.

❝ ... ❞

She walks alone through a nigh-colorless void, hands folded together. There isn't a hint of emotion present on her visage.

Her death was hollow and it was ultimately without meaning. But that was her greatest fear and now, she has nothing more to hide.

Leaving behind no song and no -

The dust and the pendant were washed completely down the drain of a sewer. A hollow clink was heard. Perhaps in her final moments, Adagio recognized...

She was the unforgivable one.
