The point is that the possibility of overreach is a price worth paying exactly because shame serves as a robustly liberal alternative to the political violence that Klein and company rightly abhor. It is, quite literally, the least one can do to ensure rules of social conduct that upheld minimal levels of dignity for all involved. Most of the alternatives involve either subjugation, combat, or both. Put another way: designating disrespect and denigration as beyond the pale, as grounds for exclusion from polite company, is "turning the temperature down." Klein and others are helping to turn it up.

The last piece of the puzzle is leadership and solidarity. The dissident movement needs a leader. AOC has been the primary person to step up, though Chris Murphy and a few others have been banging the drum. Maybe in time someone else will emerge as a more potent leader for the movement they are incubating. But either way: Without a leader, this movement will not materialize. People need a rally point. History makes that clear.

I don’t have a ton of sympathy for this as an excuse but I do think it’s an explanation of why all our institutions are falling like flies. People need to feel like civil society has their back — or that it will at least recognize them as a martyr rather than pickpocket their corpse.
We were hopeful that the legal industry would rally to our side, even though it had not done so in response to executive orders targeting other firms. We had tried to persuade other firms to come out in public support of Covington and Perkins Coie. And we waited for firms to support us in the wake of the President’s executive order targeting Paul, Weiss. Disappointingly, far from support, we learned that certain other firms were seeking to exploit our vulnerabilities by aggressively soliciting our clients and recruiting our attorneys.

But authoritarianism does not require the destruction of the constitutional order. What lies ahead is not fascist or single-party dictatorship but competitive authoritarianism—a system in which parties compete in elections but the incumbent’s abuse of power tilts the playing field against the opposition. Most autocracies that have emerged since the end of the Cold War fall into this category, including Alberto Fujimori’s Peru, Hugo Chávez’s Venezuela, and contemporary El Salvador, Hungary, India, Tunisia, and Turkey. Under competitive authoritarianism, the formal architecture of democracy, including multiparty elections, remains intact. Opposition forces are legal and aboveground, and they contest seriously for power. Elections are often fiercely contested battles in which incumbents have to sweat it out. And once in a while, incumbents lose, as they did in Malaysia in 2018 and in Poland in 2023.

Right -- as demonstrated by their own graphs (but not mentioned in the article).

The "true rate" includes addition people such as those who are under-employed and those making $25,000 or less. The "true rate" line is consistently ~20 points higher than the "headline rate" but goes up and down at approximately the same times and, like the "headline rate", the "true rate" has spent the past few years at a record low.

I had the same question and I when I looked into it the standard info just seems wrong. According to this graph from the wiki page on vyvanse, vyvanse has pretty much the exact same concentration curve as the immediate release version, just delayed an hour.

The two curves are extremely similar except the vyvanse curve is slightly less pointy and shifted right by about 90 mins.
