This photo is not staged. This really happened. I walked into the kitchen to get myself an energy drink and warm up a bottle for one of the kids. I walked out of the kitchen with a bottle of cold milk, and went back to figure out what I’d done.

During setup for SGDQ ‘25, I walked up to the host desk, and I cried a little. It was the first event I’d ever attended that I didn’t host. It was strange to know I wouldn’t be there.

I can’t tell you how happy I am to be going back home for AGDQ ‘26. I’m back, fam, and damn I missed you all. 💙

Boots Slayton

June 13, 2013 - October 4, 2025

Our first dog. His momma’s first baby. Terror of squirrels and delivery people. The laziest borkest old boy. Bed hog. Toe shark. Spot thief. Kitchen criminal.

Love you, buddy. I’ll miss you. You were a good boy.
Maybe my favorite picture of Boots. Summer 2016, he was 3. We were over on the Earlham campus where I’d take him for walk. There’s a big stone that we took to calling “Hup Rock” for the way he’d jump right up on it. January 2020. He was 6 years, the kids were 7 months. He wasn’t super close to the kids; not sure he appreciated how much of HIS mom’s attention they took. But he was never mean or aggressive, either. My first picture of Boots. August 2013, he was just short of 2 months old. His mother was a stray and he was born in the shelter. All the puppies in the litter were given “A” names; they called him Alva. I met him before Mia. She was off visiting family in LA, just a couple weeks after we’d moved to this town. I went to the shelter to see what dogs they had while she was away. I may have picked him, but we would end up being solidly and entirely Mia’s dog. My last picture of Boots. Yesterday, October 3rd. The other side of his face is torn up from the infection and his constant rubbing at it, so I got it from this angle. Even after I moved out, he would always get excited when he realized I had come over to visit. With as much as he loved Mia, it was… humbling as hell, to see that he loved me too. I hope I was a good owner. I hope I was a good dad. I know I wasn’t perfect. But you were a damn good boy. I’ll miss you, Duck. I’ll keep telling the stories. The chicken and the hot dogs. The duck and the fences and the florist. The skunk. Doors and sitting. The soccer ball, and the front door. Duck legs and power-licking. All of them. I’ll do you right. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Now get some sleep, old bud. Love you.
