I give it a year before Trump administration goes after the UN and makes up a bunch of bs reasons as cover and then Trump has a press conference to explicitly say it's actually about the UN headquarter building in NY and how he's always wanted his name on it and that the US should take it back...etc

Trump's press conference announcing invasion targets looks like this and uk gov saying it doesn't quite rhyme so they can't comment

Imagine if they had done it now because they saw Amorim is suddenly available and Desmond wants to splash cash to quell fan discontent... 😜

Frantically pitching new shows:
Fucking the Manor
Homes Under the clawHammer
Bland Designs

Would 100% watch a show where mansion owners tearfully install astroturf or get you to fuck the place up with a hammer.

This reminds me of that Arthur C Clarke short story The Nine Billion Names of God...

Very cool and love that it makes me think of one of my favourite bit part Simpsons characters - Karl.
To Homer: "Stand naturally, Mr Simpson - let it all hang out."
To the tailor: "You. Conceal it."

Take as old as time

Hard times create floppy men. Floppy men create good times. Good times create unfloppy men. Unfloppy men create hard times.

These people did not have a "strategy" beyond take credit when things are good (nothing to do with them), pretend all still good when it's clear political decisions are going to torpedo intl student numbers, take money until the last minute before running away to let their staff suffer consequences.

HE sector is broken and it starts at the top.
People unqualified to manage a single line budget are tossing words like "strategy" around constantly. As if just using that word confers some kind of wisdom or ability to plan ahead.

People - experts within the institutions themselves - were warning about this for years. And now people will lose their jobs across the UK. Not the people who have responsible. Because they are not accountable.
The workers on normal salaries will pay for senior mismanagement.
February 26, 2025 at 10:11 AM
Are we seeing senior management lose their positions for disastrous mismanagement? No. They're still pocketing hundreds of thousands in bonuses and busy with their knighthoods.
It's these student numbers to blame. Just blame the numbers. Nothing to be done about it. Who could have foreseen it?
February 26, 2025 at 10:11 AM
Principals. And senior management. Principals on nearly half a million a year salaries who gambled on a volatile business model that is subject to the whims of ever flakier governments and the murky vested interests driving their policies.
And what should consequences be for this?
February 26, 2025 at 10:11 AM
Some of the bigger universities are absolutely using this (real crisis) as cover to bury bad news. As per the article "partly blamed" on lower international student numbers. What or who else is to blame? But just on intl student numbers - who should be blamed for the consequences of mismanagement?

What can the public do in the face of such bare faced attempts to give away comminuted parkland?
February 23, 2025 at 1:43 PM
Paul Leinster's treatment of Friends of Cathkin Park is a very relevant current example. The council apparently ignoring judicial reviews to steamroller the destruction of a public green space of historic note is pretty despicable as is their contempt of local residents.
February 23, 2025 at 1:43 PM
This is a really good article and I agree. I think there's also something to be said about when the council act in bad faith, completely dismissing or actively blocking attempts by the public to do just what is suggested in the article.
