I was introduced to the holiday when I was a kid in school (like, 2nd grade, I think?), and loved it ever since. It wasn't celebrated where I lived in any way officially (and nowadays, celebrating it can straight lead you to getting arrested...), but hey, *I* still love it.

If you'd like, a very simple way to resolve this issue is that, yep, people did show up and told them that "The King" was just a popular musician named "Elvis"... and the cult-gang told them to piss off with the lies about their deity figure.
And after that, not a lot of people tried to *argue*...
