Those working in the cjs know prisons cause great harm & have limited benefit to society but the conversation rarely goes further than our sector.
So I'm delighted The Bodley Head who publish all kinds of thought-changing books, want to publish my book-to-be, "Imprisoned: The Case for Change".

This was meant to be an omelette.
I‘d forgotten to add the cheese.
(I know that is not all that was wrong with it 😊)

At the BBC to record an essay for radio broadcast as part of the New Generation Thinkers programme. A very easy process thanks to a great producer, Lisa Jenkinson.
Mothers, punishment, patriarchy all covered in 13 minutes 💪

This @hmiprisonsnews.bsky.social thematic report using data from 4 women's reception prisons is a shocking read, even for those who work in the sector.

Prison is a very unsafe place for women.

Having read this novel in the past week it feels less like sci fi and more like a manual for surviving a US administration that doesn’t engage with the climate crisis. Brilliant book. Thoroughly recommend.

Yesterday I presented present a report commissioned by The Weavers' and co-authored with @rutharmstrong.bsky.social in which we used problem solving courts for women to think about what works for justice involved women, and what a women-centric system would look like. www.clinks.org/sites/defaul...

Fog and no visibility all day until just before sunset. It’s always such a relief to see some light.

It was good to catch up with Bishop Rachel Treweek today, and after our meeting I took the opportunity to wander around beautiful Gloucester Cathedral. If you watch Wolf Hall the cloisters will be familiar.

Reviewing case law re dependent children & horrified to discover 2024 appeal on sentence where mother of a 1 month old baby was sentenced without a Pre-Sentence Report. 2 applications for a report declined! Sentencing Guidelines state clearly there should be a PSR if a woman is a mother or pregnant

A flying visit to Belfast for my daughter’s graduation @qubhistory.bsky.social and not only was there sunshine but in the Great Hall I bumped into @drtdegenhardt.bsky.social and enjoyed a reminder of Seamus Heaney.

village is flooded: river exceeded previous high of 3.03m (24.12.20) by 40cm. No water in the house but surrounded by it. It’s really unsettling & I’m recognising my privilege of protection from realities of climate change events which affect the UK much less than many other regions. #climatecrisis
