That's another thing, too. Environmental collapse (the deaths of multiple species) in one geographic location can affect species in other geographic locations, including non-human species.
It wouldn't take that long for a major fish kill to affect island populations.

Like yes, I'm sure there's extremely rural communities of people who would survive a nuclear war, and maybe live decades before environmental radiation and/or the deaths of external species and critical biomes eventually took them out?

If irradiating the atmosphere isn't a big deal after all, then why aren't we just disposing of nuclear waste by shooting it into space and risking a garbage shuttle explosion?
