I had two people ask me in the space of a month if I had books to recommend for a beginner. While I'm not sure I'd lead out with Bentham or JS Mill, I think Russell's got great and accessible prose for a newcomer. I did warn both of them that Aristotle/Plato are hopelessly unavoidable.
