You heard our review of the 2025 movie "Weapons", but what did Madisynn think of it?

TK Bellows’ look as a whole is anachronistic. It seems to be based on this picture of Gene Roddenberry at a convention in 1976 ↙️, though Gene wears much more stylish frames than Bellows. In 1967, toward the end of Star Trek’s first season, Gene was way more clean cut ↘️.

TK Bellows wears an interesting and anachronistic pair of glasses in “A Space Adventure Hour”. They’re S9 frames, also known as “birth control frames”. From 1990 to 2012 they were standard military issue to navy and army recruits. Saddam Hussein was given a pair when he was captured in 2003.

Anyone else notice Christina Chong talks into the bottom of her communicator like a smartphone in speaker phone mode? ↖️↗️ Ethan Peck ↙️ and Celia Rose Gooding ↘️ hold it the traditional way.

Sharing a BTS shot from The Black Hole we’ve never seen before. This is from the utterly flawless meteor in the hallway scene. Shocking that it was done on plain old blue screen.

If someone replaced Paul Wesley with a muppet no one would notice.

Let’s say your robot says “you can’t unscramble eggs” and “a good offense is the best defense”. Would you then understand he wants you to use the Cygnus’s probe ship to escape now that your own ship has been destroyed? We feel like we’d die trying to figure it out.

By the end of his appearance in the movie Durant is practically writhing with lust as Reinhardt gives commands on the bridge. He can’t even look at McCray when she speaks to him. It’s one thing to be generally excited about a mission but he particularly can’t take his eyes off his crush.

Perkins had a long term boyfriend early in his career. He knew ways to communicate desire for another man, one of which is to look at his lips as much as at his eyes. It’s a really wonderfully subversive performance for a Disney film.
April 19, 2025 at 5:47 PM
In this scene Reinhardt, who is an obvious megalomaniac, telling Perkins’ Durant that he’s a man in search of something. The camera lingers on Perkins’ face for a while as it runs the gamut of emotions of a man figuring something out. And that something is “Does he like me as much as I like him?”

Anthony Perkins’ performance in The Black Hole is extremely unsettling. He’s nervous throughout, especially when he meets Reinhardt. The chemistry between the two is unmissable. Perkins downright falls in love and mostly seems worried others will notice. Here’s a thread of his best horny faces:

Most of the time the Palomino's holographic display was done in camera. In the first pic you can see the projection hitting Earnest Borgnine's arm and casting a shadow ↙️. In the second pic it's clear the effect was composited in during post and a matte was cut around Joseph Bottom's body↘️.

This kind of depth of field without a split diopter? Robert Wise, eat your heart out.

Here’s more of Robert not being mad.

Robert McCall, who painted the famous 2001: A Space Odyssey poster, was initially the art director for The Black Hole. His Cygnus design is the basis of the final design. He was replaced 6 weeks in with Peter Ellenshaw. But he wasn’t mad. Please don’t put in the magazine that he got mad.

Joseph Bottoms, who played Charlie Pizer in the Black Hole, won a “New Star of the Year” Golden Globe for the miniseries “The Dove”. But according to google image search he’s most famous for a photo spread he did for the New York entertainment magazine “After Dark”. Happy Friday!

Although much of The Black Hole was shot on blue screen, many of it's outer space footage was not. To avoid matte lines on the complex ships they were filmed them in front of an enormous hand-painted backdrop with thousands of backlit holes punched in it for the stars.

As for our game of rewriting Joseph Bottoms' accursed line "I should have known he was all talk, no guts, and locked him up", none of the adaptation writers play. Whitman and Kirby leave it out. Foster only adds an "and" between "all talk" and "no guts". @ryanthomasriddle.com still wins.
April 17, 2025 at 5:39 PM
No one includes Reinhardt and Maximilian in hell. They only deal with the Palomino crew who sleep through the black hole in the Whitman comic. Kirby turns them into incorporeal thought and returns them to normal on the other side. Foster's ending scatters their conscious atoms across the universe.
April 17, 2025 at 5:27 PM
The Black Hole incorrectly refers to the swarm of rocks pelting the Cygnus as "meteorites". Meteorites are meteors that are already sitting on the earth's surface. Both Kirby and Foster keep the term. The Whitman comic refers to them correctly as "asteroids". None of them keep them burning hot.
April 17, 2025 at 5:12 PM
It's curious to see how various print versions of The Black Hole handled its weirder scenes. Anthony Perkin's evisceration is so graphic ↖️ no one adapts it accurately. In all cases he's lasered – by Reinhardt in the Whitman comic ↗️, and by Maximilian in the Kirby strip ↙️ and Alan Dean Foster novel ↘️

New episode alert! The Jerks get lost in the highway of the sacred timeline. Wild that the series ended with Loki trapped in the David Lynch film LOST HIGHWAY! Now that's a twist. Or is it? J/K but we do talk Loki and Lynch plus Star Trek TOS.
