He’s barely out of breath. “Stay down, shortstack. I got you.”

You’ve seen it, the way the last dragging steps of an expedition often make him a target for people in Trost. You were there once when he stepped out of a carriage at HQ and someone’s grieving brother tried to take a swing at him. Besides, the thought of getting Erwin to yourself, out and about Trost with you on midwinter’s eve, with no one the wiser—it was damn tempting. You said, “But you won’t tell me where we’re going?” “Indulge me. I get so few chances to surprise you.”

Not long after, standing beneath it, it’s hard to believe there’s anything inside it. He ties his horse to an old post on the western outskirts of the ruined houses, avoiding the pile of gathered dead further east. Brown clouds of blood still darken the pale stone of the walls, some trailing long rivulets from snowmelt and rain. “Have to scrub that off before people come back,” he tells his mount absently. He tucks gloves into his belt, along with a kerchief. He’s already bundled a sheet into the pack on his back to wrap and carry what’s left of Erwin. The city remains eerily still when he crests the wall and an irregular carpet of red roofing spreads out beneath him. Somewhere close, a shop sign squeaks in the breeze. Pigeon wings slap together in a nearby bell tower.

And Erwin always catches his hand and pulls him back. Levi grumbles, but you’ve caught the way he fights a smile as he goes. You’ve seen how he waits for it if Erwin is lagging a few steps behind. This morning, after their kiss but before Levi steps out, he glances back at you with something almost…nervous in his gaze. Practically vulnerable.
